Afraid to turn up at her sister's wedding alone after being perpetually single since her long term boyfriend left her two years previously, Kat Ellis hires a sophisticated male escort to pose as her partner. During the course of the wedding proceedings, Kat's relationship with her new companion, Nick, becomes more than just business.
You know the outcome of the story before you've even started the film: a pretty woman meets an equally attractive man, attraction ensues, there's a complication, and then everything resolves itself wonderfully. 'The Wedding Date' doesn't attempt to be anything more than a stereotypical rom-com, but it does the basics rather well and it is a happy, feel-good film. Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney play Kat and Nick respectively, and whilst there's nothing new or exciting about their relationship as compared with the countless other films from the genre, there does appear to be some onscreen chemistry going on that makes the film very watchable. There are a few amusing moments, although nothing as slap-stick as something like 'Bridget Jones', and with a relatively short running time, the whole contrivance doesn't feel over-egged. Everyone looks beautifully quaffed and some of the outfits are very pretty, and that's about it. The film is wholly surface and wholly unoriginal, but it's fairly well made, looks as attractive as its cast and has a fairly engaging love story in the middle. If you were having a rough day, you could do much worse than to curl up and watch this.
